The pie chart shows us how the UK government spent their budget of £ 315 billion in 10 categories, in 1996.
Social security took the highest amount of the budget which was £100 billion. In the second rank came health and personal social services with £53 billion which is more than the half of the first. £38 billion was spent on education: that came in third. Debt interest, other expenditure and defence are close to each other, £25 billion, £23 billion and £22 billion respectively. They spent about £ 17 billion for law and order. Housing, heritage and environment cost £15 billion. The two other things to be mentioned are industry, agriculture & employment, £13 billion, and transport, £9 billion.
The UK spent about half of the budget on the social security and health and personal social services in 1996.
